Greek containership owner Costamare has expanded its newbuilding programme in China, adding two more 3,100 teu vessels to its growing series.

The New York-listed company said in its third-quarter earnings report that the vessels are scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2028 from an undisclosed Chinese shipyard. Both ships will go straight onto eight-year charters with a leading liner company.

The deal brings Costamare’s total orders for 3,100 teu newbuildings to six, marking a further step in its measured return to the shipyard market. Earlier this year, Costamare made its first move back into newbuilding orders since 2018, signalling renewed confidence in long-term charter demand for mid-sized boxships.

Konstantinos Konstantakopoulos-le Costamare currently operates a fleet of 69 containerships, totalling around 520,000 teu, excluding the newbuilds. The company has been steadily rebalancing its portfolio after recent years of selective vessel sales and growing investment in dry bulk shipping. The dry bulk business was spun off earlier this year under Costamare Bulkers, including nearly 40 owned vessels and a chartered-in fleet of roughly 50 ships operating through its CBI platform.
