Castor returns to bulker buying with $37.5m deal for modern kamsarmax
Cyprus-based Nasdaq-listed owner Castor Maritime has struck a deal to buy a 2023-built eco kamsarmax bulker for $37.5m.
The Petros Panagiotidis-led company said the unnamed vessel, which costs in the region of newbuildings currently quoted by brokers at Chinese shipyards, is being acquired from an unaffiliated third party through a wholly-owned subsidiary.
Delivery is expected by the end of the quarter, subject to customary closing conditions. Castor said the purchase would be funded with cash on hand.
The deal for the vessel, which will become the youngest in Castor’s fleet, will lift the company’s portfolio to 10 vessels, comprising nine bulkers and one containership with an aggregate capacity of about 700,000 dwt.
Castor has been reshaping its fleet over the past couple of years through a string of bulker and containership deals. The company added a 2020-built kamsarmax Magic Ariel (pictured) for $29.95m in 2024 and earlier this year entered into a sale and leaseback deal for the 2013-built kamsarmax Magic Perseus.
The company has also moved beyond vessel ownership. In late 2024, Castor bought a majority stake in Frankfurt-listed asset manager MPC Münchmeyer Petersen Capital, which in turn controls boxship owner MPC Container Ships.
