Despite collapse of KG newbuilding investment model in Germany, newbuilding orders for containership reached a considerable level for about four and a half years up to now, February 2013, since September 2008 when there was a global financial crisis.
According to maritime consultant Alphaliner, newbuilding orders for 445 containerships of a combined 3.02mTEU were confirmed, equivalent to 18.4% of existing tonnage.
Although this amounts are the level of half the newbuilding boxship orders inked from 2006 to 2008, a pre-crisis period of the industry, considering the fact that it was a period with the overcapacity, substantial numbers are ordered and the volume of idle vessels from post-crisis period duruing September 2008-February 2013 was reported to have reached 5% of total fleet on average.
Meanwhile, while the weight of newbuilding contracts from container carriers (in TEU terms) increased to 58% during a Post-crisis period from 49% of Pre-crisis period, newbuilding contract proportion of German KG shipowners sharply decreased to 2% from 26% during the same time period. Moreover, orders contracted by various non-operating owners, other than KG shipowners, greatly rose from 25% to 40% in the period.
Among shipping companies, the order weights taken by top 21 global shipping companies expanded from 48% to 53% during the same time period and the weights owned by the rest of small and medium companies rose as well from 1% to 5%.
