Japanese shipbuilding industry reported the lowest monthly new orders contracted for export last month, during the 2012 fiscal year from April 2012 to March 2013.
The Japan Ship Exporter’s Association (JSEA) revealed on March 14 that during February Japanese shipyards contracted a total of five export ships of 170,000 gt, which saw a 58% year-on-year decrease in gt terms.
All the newbuildings contracted were bulkers - one handysize, three handymaxes and one post-panamax. The number of order for foreign shipowner is said to be only one.
Yen-denominated deals accounted for 21%, while dollar contracts took 79%.
On the basis of delivery year, FY 2013 and FY 2014 accounted for 81% and 19%, respectively.
Contracts through trading companies accounted for 19%.
A total of 147 newbuildings of a cumulative 6.65m gt were contracted in FY 2012.
In February, 22 ships of 1.13m gt went through customs, which also representing delivery, up by 11% on the same month of last year. Overall 295 vessels of a cumulative 13.44m gt had been delivered during the fiscal year of 2012.
As of the end of last year, orderbook stood at 542 vessels of 24.55m gt (11.06m cgt), declined by 28 vessels of 1.51m gt.
