Although freight market is still in a downturn and an excessive tonnage problem has not been resolved yet, newbuilding Eco-ship ordering seems to be on an increase.
Analyst Park Moo-Hyun at E*Trade Securities of Korea has said, “After the first quarter of 2013, new orders for merchant vessel have now reached 40% of annual order intakes in 2012,” and continued, “In the first quarter, new orders for major commercial ships, such as bulker, tanker, containership and etc., were a total of 239 vessels, which represents 36.4% of last year’s 657 vessels and 42% in cgt terms.”
Korea's major shipyards are said to have won a predominant number of PC tankers among their order intakes in the first quarter in 2013. 56 PC tankers were newly ordered this year and 42 among them were reported to be placed at Korean shipyards.
Moreover, of 56 PC tankers, 44 MR tankers were ordered and among them, Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and SPP Shipbuilding won 18 and 14 tankers each that a competition structure of MR PC tanker is getting eased, the analyst pointed out.
Park has stressed that there is a lack of builders capable of constructing MR tankers against its increasing demands; therefore, in shipbuilding market, MR tanker sector is seen to be showing the fastest improvement than others.
