Shipping Market on Recovery
Long protracted global shipping market slump is expected to end the depression and start to recover.
Andrew Chiang, regional head Asia for shipping, offshore and logistics for DNB, said “I cannot see the market going down further.”
He added, however, full recovery will take at least about two years. Particularly, containership segment seems to struggle even harder, since shipowners keep ordering bigger fuel-efficient newbuilding boxships by an advantage of scale of economy.
Mr Chiang said the situation is "worrisome", but private equity fund is making its entry again into shipping finance. Therefore, owners who are having problems in securing shipping finance could be helped by private equity money.
Meanwhile, regarding market prospect by segment, he is optimistic about gas carriers and car carriers.
