Containership demolition in the first three months in 2013 is reported to have posted the third highest record in quarterly terms, with some 48 vessels of a combine of 102,792 teu having gone to scrapping facilities.
According to Clarkson Research Services, of the total boxships scrapped during the first quarter this year, 14 containerships of 30,491 teu concentrated solely in March.
While sixteen vessels over 3,000 teu sizes were sold for scrap in Q1, “All ships demolished have been below 8,000-teu as this fleet is relatively old when compared to the 8,000+ teu fleet, the first of which was only delivered in 1997,” the shipbroker research arm said.
Meanwhile, the London-based shipbroker predicted that a total of 349,300 teu and under 200,000 teu boxships would be recycled in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
