Korea Targets Preoccupying BWTS Market
There is a market which gained KRW 770bn ($691m) for the past three years of overseas orders by recognizing international regulations as an opportunity for creating new market.
That is Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS). The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of Korea announced on July 30 that the governmental department has given support to BWTS industry by offering budgets for R&D, promotion and so on.
As a result, Korea was able to dominate around 54% (871 vessels) proportion of international market for the past three years and according to the ministry, contract values of domestic BWTS manufacturers were as the following as of July 1, 2013; Techcross gained KRW 287.5bn, PANASIA KRW 157bn, Hyundai Heavy Industries KRW 130bn, NK KRW 100bn, Samsung Heavy Industries KRW 92bn and so on, totalling nearly KRW 776.1bn.
In the near future, 68,000 vessels around the world are required to feature BWTS, thus the market is expected to expand up to KRW 80trn worth between 2012 and 2019.
Accordingly, the governmental body decided to aggressively proceed with government support to dominate global BWTS market in advance, said MOF.
MOF is planning to achieve market dominance in BWTS sector by offering the government salupport and creating jobs for around 10,000 people in marine field by 2019, with an aim to contribute to the development of creative economy.
