Eyal Ofer’s Zodiac Maritime has strengthened its position in the car carrier sector with a fresh order for two LNG dual-fuel car carriers in China.

The London-based shipowner has contracted the 7,000 ceu vessels at its long-term partner yard Yantai CIMC Raffles for delivery in 2028.

The latest deal adds to one of the industry’s largest PCTC newbuilding programmes as owners continue to chase strong demand linked to rising vehicle exports out of China.

The new order follows the delivery of 10 previously contracted vessels from the same yard.

The company has been one of the more active owners in the rapidly expanding vehicle carrier market and was among the first operators to charter PCTCs to Chinese automotive groups BYD and Geely.

Its current fleet stands at 22 PCTCs, with further expansion underway through the growing orderbook.

The relationship between Zodiac and Yantai CIMC Raffles stretches back several years. The original agreement signed in 2021 covered four firm 7,000 ceu vessels worth about $83m each and included options for as many as 12 ships.

The most recent pair booked in 2023 reportedly cost around $92.5m per vessel, although no pricing details have been disclosed for the latest order.

In related recent shipbuilding activity, Zodiac has also been broadening its exposure to alternative fuel segments. Earlier this month, the owner moved into ammonia shipping through a deal with Hanwha Ocean covering a series of ammonia carriers.
