Thenamaris has moved ahead with another round of tanker fleet renewal, booking three LR2 newbuildings at Hengli Heavy Industries as the Greek owner continues to expand its presence in the product tanker segment.

The Chinese shipbuilder disclosed the deal through social media, although no pricing or delivery dates were revealed.

The latest order adds to a busy newbuilding programme for the Nikolas Martinos-led shipping group, which has been steadily renewing and expanding its tanker fleet across multiple ship classes.

Thenamaris currently operates a diversified fleet that includes more than 20 LR2 tankers alongside over 50 tankers in total, 24 bulk carriers, seven LNG carriers, six LPG carriers and two containerships, excluding vessels under construction.

The owner has been particularly active in the LR2 market in recent years. In 2025, the company took delivery of a series of LR2 product tankers from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme.

The fresh order in China follows reports earlier this year that Thenamaris had also returned to the South Korean newbuilding market with a contract for MR2 product tankers at HD Hyundai Mipo. According to Athens-based broker reports, the company signed up for four scrubber-fitted 50,000 dwt vessels at the Ulsan yard, with deliveries scheduled through 2028.

Beyond conventional tankers, Thenamaris has also been widening its exposure to alternative fuel shipping segments. Earlier this year the company entered the very large ammonia carrier sector with an order for two 90,000 cu m VLAC newbuildings at Jiangnan Shipyard. Those vessels are expected to deliver in 2029 and marked the owner’s first move into ammonia shipping.

The latest Hengli contract also highlights the growing role of the Chinese yard in attracting Greek tanker business. Other Greek owners linked to LR2 newbuildings at Hengli in recent months include Minerva Marine, interests tied to the Laskaridis Shipping Group and Monte Nero Maritime.
