Shanghai Shipyard of China started to construct China's first designed drillship on June 1.
The 45,000-gt drillship, 170m in length and 32m in breadth, has been newly ordered by Reignwood Group of China's Singapore-based subsidiary OPUS Offshore in September 2011 and is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2014.
One of TIGER series, it can operate from 915m to 1,500m underwater and is capable of drilling up to 10,000m.
Meanwhile, China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC)-affiliated Shanghai Shipyard contracted for two drillships and additional two more with OPUS in September last year.
With a recent construction of drillship, Shanghai Shipyard plans to target small-sized ships in offshore sector.
