Cape/Handy Bulker Growth Slows
As newbuilding delivery of capesize and handysize bulker slows down steadily, pressure of fleet growth is being relieved.
According to Clarkson's latest statistics, a total of 21 capesize bulkers have been delivered in the first two months of this year, which represents up to 130 vessels on an annualized basis. The annualized number for 2013 declined by 40% from 2012's overall 214 vessels.
Overall 14 capesizes were sold for scrap during the first two months of 2013, which getting closer to its delivery record.
Also, delivery of handysize bulker marked 39 newbuildings during January-February period of last year. 39 vessels, on an annualized basis, would post 20% decrease year-on-year from 2012's 303 vessels.
During the same period, a total of 41 vessels headed towards scrapping facilities, which passing the number of those delivered. Handysize is the only bulker size which saw its fleet downsized.
