Liaoning Shipbuilding: Play 'Remarkable'
Amid a global downturn in shipbuilding industry, shipbuilders in Liaoning, China are said to have shown a relatively strong performance. Liaoning province ranked at the fourth place of newbuilding delivery in 2011 within China, which jumped up two ranks in 2012.
Last year, newbuilding delivery, new order and orderbook in China declined by 21.4%, 43.6% and 28.7% each, while Liaoning saw its delivery up by 19.24% year-on-year to 13,116,300 dwt and new order increased by around 1.5 times. Only orderbook in Liaoning fell by 5.92%.
Among 11 shipbuilders in Liaoning province, top five groups including Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), etc., show pretty high level in technical skills. Also, they have good brand images and take almost 99% of total delivery in the area.
Liaoning has achieved restructuring through innovations in techniques and its competitiveness has gradually improved;
for example, DSIC won three fuel-efficient 319,000 dwt tankers (energy consumption saved by 20%) with two options, Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Company (BSIC) successfully entered into a high specification ship market by having developed an environmental friendly Ro-Ro vessel type and COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard is said to have reached the last stage of building the world’s largest deep-sea drillship. Moreover, DSIC Offshore is said to have agreed to take effect of two jack-up drilling rigs with a Norwegian company.
