Containership Delivery Slows Down
London-based shipbroker Braemar has predicted that about 47 containerships of 10,000TEU or even bigger will be delivered in 2013. However, in the first few months, the delivery of boxships has been slowed down obviously. It is estimated that about 20 mega containership are to be delivered this year if current conditions continue.
According to Braemar, only three 10,000TEU or bigger containerships were delivered, declining greatly compared with eight deliveries in the same period of last year.
Analyst Roach said current slow delivery is likely caused by the delivery contraction between shipyards and owners. However, Roach considers the slowdown as normal given current box shipping market.
At the same time, Braemar points out that the scrapping volume of containerships is to exceed new deliveries this year. Since the beginning of this year, about 39 containerships of 90,000TEU were sent for scrapping, with an average ship age of 21 years old. About 15 containerships of 1,000TEU to 1,999TEU were sent for recycling, following by 14 units of 3,000TEU to 4,000TEU.
By the end of February, global cellular boxship capacity has been up to 16.3mTEU while total order catalog is about 3.5m TEU.
