“Deepwater construction vessel” of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering was selected as Korea’s excellent technology in 2013.

Daewoo’s ‘Deepwater construction vessel’ won Award of Excellence at ‘2013 Korea Technology Awards’ organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy (MOTIE) of Korea and supervised by Korea Industrial Technology Development Organization, the Korean shipbuilding giant said on November 13.

The Korea Technology Awards recognize products which generate massive effects in domestic industry with high technical performance among technologies and products developed in Korea and succeeded in commercialization.

The vessel is the one awarded at Daewoo in 2012 from Heerema Offshore Services B.V., specialized in offshore structure transport and installation with decommission based in the Netherlands. Daewoo applied further advanced technology for the vessel compared to existing models.

Dynamic Positioning System is applied in the construction for the world’s first time, which is capable of managing the center of ship within an intended scope delicately using 15 units of pump. In addition, a crane with over 4,000-ton capacity and a tower capable of laying pipes are installed on the vessel that heavy-weight lifting and subsea pipe installation works could be carried out at the same time offshore of up to 3,000 water depth.

MOTIE said, “Amid accelerating development of deepwater oilfields, installation and decommissioning works for related facilities are growing. We considered that the builder could construct a vessel capable of operating offshore with to the same level of operating onshore.”
