Jinhui Shipping and Transportation has expanded its ultramax newbuilding programme with an order for two more bulk carriers at China’s New Dayang Shipbuilding.

The Oslo-listed, Hong Kong-based owner has contracted a pair of 64,100 dwt vessels at the Sumec Marine-controlled yard for a combined price of $68m, according to stock exchange filings.

The ships are scheduled for delivery by the end of May and June 2030, respectively.

The latest deal follows closely behind an order placed last week for two 64,500 dwt ultramaxes at Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering, where Jinhui already had vessels on order.

Earlier this year, the company also booked a pair of ultramaxes at New Dayang for delivery in May and July 2029 at similar pricing levels.

The additional contracts take Jinhui’s recent ultramax ordering campaign to 10 vessels across these two Chinese shipyards, marking one of the company’s most significant fleet renewal programmes in recent years.

Jinhui said the investment forms part of its strategy to gradually replace older ships with newer and more efficient tonnage while improving the overall quality of its fleet.

The owner noted that limited availability of suitable young secondhand vessels, combined with pricing and delivery constraints in the resale market, had made newbuilding orders the more attractive option.

Alongside its ordering activity, Jinhui has been actively disposing of ageing vessels as it seeks to reduce fleet age and improve operating efficiency. The company currently controls a fleet of more than 20 dry bulk vessels, primarily focused on the supramax and ultramax segments.
